Session Nineteen: Conflict Avoidant, Sneaky, Tattletales

The title is how my group described themselves after last night’s game session. I used the Slayer’s Take as a vehicle to bring them all together – a group coming together to hunt monsters. And they do this well, very well, in fact. It’s just that when it comes to sentient beings, to investigative missions, that they get very hesitant.

I mentioned this last week, with their failed mission. They were supposed to catch an illegal sale in action, or at least recover the goods. They did neither. They did turn over the information they had about the possible buyer (no proof she actually bought anything), and where she was staying. So, they got a little good will, but also a “don’t call us, we’ll call you” dismissal from the Cobalt Soul.

This week, there was a frame job, and they had to prove their friend’s innocence, and possibly prove someone else’s guilt. They followed the book hook of looking at reports, and finding discrepancies. They went and talked to a couple witnesses. Then the hesitancy came along. They were pretty sure they had enough information to prove the innocence of their friend, but were split on confronting the suspect. Eventually deciding to just go tell the authority figure and let him deal with it.

This is absolutely fine. It’s a reasonable way to deal with things. They accomplished what they felt comfortable with and turned over their evidence. The authorities then ended up getting attacked instead of the party when the guilty person was confronted, but the authorities are used to dealing with miscreants. The party felt a little bit bad about it, but no real harm done. I’m quite curious how the next “capture or kill” mission is going to go, I’m betting on the former, but some of the fighters are getting antsy.
